Credit Suisse Network Services

Since 2007 ACAR is supporting and consulting Swisscom (Schweiz) AG and British Telecom (BT) to build up a new collaboration platform based on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) for the Credit Suisse Network Services Case. The Design and Architecture of the new collaboration platform for the three parties was the main goal of the project as well as the data migration from the old to the new SharePoint server in the farm. Since then 3 years has past. We have learned a lot about supporting a SharePoint farm and making it securely available over the extranet. 

To avoid common pitfalls and keep Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment available and performing well, we followed the best practices based on real-world experience from Microsoft Consulting Services and the product team.

 Lessons Learned (some of them are listed)

  • SharePoint Training for End Users is mandatory
  • Web based training is great. But it can not replace a professional trainer 
  • Management Support is critical. Microsoft uses the term "Portal Advocates" to justify the SharePoint Idea. Top Down Support. 
  • CHANGE MIND. THE WAY WE WORK, and worked the last 15 Years with Office Applications. Start - Open Word - Save Document - upload to Web - Download - Change - Upload again - is definitely gone.
  • Keep as much as you can "Out Of The Box". SharePoint offers a ton of functionality OOTB, but your time and effort curve increases dramatically the farther away from OOTB
  • Gaining an understanding of the product is important so that expectations can be set properly and realistic estimates can be made
  • Setting and managing expectations was critical
